Hungary to hold EU accession referendum

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy said there will be a referendum on joining the EU on April 12.

The referendum will ask Hungary's voters: "Do you agree to Hungary becoming a member of the European Union?", he told a press conference.

The premier, parliamentary speaker Katalin Szili, foreign minister Laszlo Kovacs and the heads of the country's four parliamentary parties signed an accord setting the date of the referendum.

The accord includes a statement on the terms and conditions of modifications to Hungary's constitution that need to be made before accession can take place.
