Microsoft is to make fewer acquisitions and investments, reports say.

It has suffered huge losses on holdings in cable and broadband companies, especially in the UK.

In an interview, Bill Gates said that the company had seen little return on outside investments.

There had been some successes, as in US cable operator Comcast, but there had also been spectacular failures such as its investment in UK cable group Telewest.
