MEPs today called for compulsory compensation of up to £375 (€595) for delayed or stranded air passengers - despite warnings from budget airlines that the move would certainly mean an end to bargain-basement fares.

The European Parliament said airlines should be obliged to pay punitive sums to people ‘‘bumped off’’ flights due to overbooking or cancellations, but catering and accommodation where necessary must be provided as well by law.
