Qantas - All intl flights will operate tomorrow; strike affects UK ops

Qantas Airways Ltd said domestic flights in Britain have been extensively rescheduled or cancelled due to a strike by staff tomorrow, but said all international services will fly.

International passengers have been asked to check in for their flights at least three hours before departure.

During an earlier strike on Aug 2, tens of thousands of passengers were inconvenienced and Qantas executives had to operate check-in, catering and information services.

The Australian Services Union (ASU) said up to 65% of Monday's domestic flights have been cancelled because of the strike, a figure disputed by the airline.

The workers are seeking a 10% pay rise over two years, a hike they insist is justified by a pay freeze that the unions accepted for the past year to help Qantas weather the turmoil caused by Sept 11.

The airline has offered a six percent pay hike plus a three-to-four percent one-off bonus, a package three other unions representing Qantas staff have accepted.

The ASU represents about 6,000 workers.
