A plane landed safely after the pilot reported a spilled drink had shorted out some of its electrical system, filling part of the jumbo jet with smoke.

The Virgin Atlantic jumbo jet carrying 412 passengers landed safely at Winnipeg, Canada.

The Boeing 747 had been flying from San Francisco to London.

According to the pilot, he dumped the fuel south of Winnipeg before the emergency landing.

He said it appeared a passenger had spilled a drink and shorted out the aircraft's entertainment system.

The jet landed without incident and was guided to the terminal, followed by three airport fire engines.

The passengers were not required to leave the plane.
