US Airways Group, hit hard by a slump in travel after the September 11 terrorist attacks, filed for bankruptcy protection, the company said.

The airline, which had mentioned the possibility of bankruptcy after it lost $2.1bn (€2.1bn) during 2001, said all its flights will keep operating without interruption.
