IBEC urges Govt to curb current spending

The employers’ body IBEC has urged the Government to control public spending after an IMF report expressed concern at the state of Ireland’s public finances.

The report warned against further increases in spending and said inflation and high wages are threatening competitiveness.

IBEC spokesman Aebhric McGibney said: "Unless we curb the growth in current spending, there won’t be enough money to spend on the necessary capital spending.

"The long-term viability of the economy is under threat unless that capital infrastructure is put in place."
