Dr Martens closes factory as demand falls

Dr Martens is to close one of its factories because of a downturn in demand for its boots and shoes.

The firm will close its plant at Wellingborough, Northants with the loss of 124 jobs.

It will keep open its other factories at Nene Park, Leicestershire and Wollaston, West Midlands where around 1,200 people work.

The Daily Telegraph says the move follows the closure of another factory in Somerset last December.

Company secretary William Johnson said: "In the past we thought we transcended normal rules of competition, but I don't think it's true any more."

A company spokeswoman said: "This is not the death knell for Dr Martens. Sales suffered for a number of reason including a change of trend, particularly in the US. We are taking steps to ensure our future."
