EDS to cut workforce by 2,000

Computer services company EDS plans to reduce its workforce by 2,000, or 1.4% of its 140,000 staff.

EDS employs 300 staff in the Republic, but it is not known if there will be redundancies in Ireland.

The announcement comes just one week after one of EDS's major customers, WorldCom, announced that it had booked $336m in revenues erroneously.

EDS has insisted that the job cuts were not related to its WorldCom contract, which is an eleven year $6.4bn IT outsourcing deal.

EDS said that WorldCom was current with payments and that it represented a small percentage of its earnings over the next two quarters.
