US clothing company Levi Strauss is to lay off 3,600 workers by closing six of its eight plants in the United States in an effort to boost profits.

The San Francisco-based firm hopes to increase sales by moving away from manufacturing and getting its products made by contractors in poorer countries, where low wages keep costs to a minimum.
