The FTSE 100 Index is down 18.8 points at 5223.2 after losing modest gains achieved in the opening few minutes of trading.

London traders had been given some encouragement from Wall Street as the Dow Jones Industrial Average picked up 2% and the tech-laden Nasdaq gained 3% yesterday.
