Footsie climbs nearly 40 points

The FTSE 100 Index is building on yesterday's much-needed gains, rising by 38.6 to 5139.3 at mid-morning.

The mood has been helped by data suggesting an improvement in the business climate in Germany, lifting hopes of an economic recovery for the rest of Europe.
