Millions of UK Vodafone customers were unable to use their mobile phones due to a fault with the company’s computer system.

Users in the north-west of England were unable to make or receive calls and text messages after technical problems began at 5pm on Tuesday.

The knock-on effect meant that many customers in other parts of the country also had difficulty with their text messaging service.

The fault was repaired at 4am today and the service is back to normal, a Vodafone spokesman said.

A ‘‘sizeable number’’ of the network’s 12 million customers were affected by the fault.

‘‘The service has now been totally restored. Luckily much of the problem occurred overnight, when the network is not so busy, but we apologise to our customers for the inconvenience,’’ the spokesman said.
