Nokia sets sights on the ultimate in luxury handsets
Nokia has announced it is to begin making hand-crafted mobiles for the rich.
The Vertu range will be marketed as the world's most exclusive personal communications instruments.
The company says the first €24,261 gold, platinum and sapphire encrusted devices will be available by the summer.
The range - to be overseen by a new London-based subsidiary - is inspired by the principles of quality craftsmanship of the past.
Nokia's creative director Frank Nuovo said: "History has provided inspired examples of dedication to precision craft and design. Our ambition applies this approach to proven advanced mobile phone technology."
The first devices will boast a sapphire-adorned crystal face and platinum and gold bezels.
The workings will also be of the finest craftsmanship. The company says it has applied for 20 new patents to ensure the reception is as polished as the phone's appearance.
Handsets will only be available via personal appointment via outlets within top jewellers.
The Vertu subsidiary will be headquartered in the UK with offices in Paris, New York, LA and Hong Kong.
