Euro rises against the dollar
The euro is up one US cent against the dollar on international markets to just over 90 cents.
Market analysts say the arrival of the currency has boosted the euro.
In Rome there are reports that some bank machines have run out of currency because of demand for notes.
Here businesses are dealing with the currency for the first time after re-opening following the Christmas break.
The Euro Changeover Board is reporting that the conversion is going according to plan.
No major hiccups have been reported.
In addition to cash machines, businesses are giving all change in the new currency in an effort to boost circulation.
