Shareholders of British Telecommunications, which last year bought Esat Telecom, have voted for the demerger of the company's mobile unit.

This will lead to the creation of two holding companies, BT Group and mm02 which will be separately listing on the London stock exchange.

Digifone [formerly Esat Digifone] is a wholly owned subsidiary of mm02.

It is expected that the companies in the mm02 group [Digifone, BT Cellnet, Viag Interkom, Telfort, Manx Telecom and Genie] will ultimately share a common brand name, 02.

The migration of the existing mobile brands to 02 will start in Spring 2002.
