Japan in a spin over no-detergent washing machine

Japanese electrical giant Sanyo has unveiled what it says is the world’s first washing machine that doesn’t need detergent.

Sanyo’s new Denkaisui model range uses ultrasonic waves and electrolysis instead of messy liquids or powders, the Osaka-based company says.

The ultrasonic waves produce bubbles that batter dirt particles, which are then dissolved by a combination of activated oxygen and hypochlorous acid generated by electrolysing the wash water.

Sanyo is billing the Denkaisui as an environmentally friendly washing machine. But for the meanest stains, the manufacturer still recommends using detergent.

The top Denkaisui model will sell for 128,000 yen (£680) and is due to arrive in Japanese stores in August.

Sanyo has not said whether the machine will be exported.
