Union in bid to save electronics jobs

A leading union will this week stage a special summit in response to the wave of job cuts in the electronics industry.

The Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU) wants firms to ‘‘hold their nerve’’ against problems caused by fluctuations in the global market.

Companies which have recently announced redundancies, including Ericsson and Motorola, have been invited to send representatives to the meeting in London on Friday.

AEEU national officer Danny Carrigan said: ‘‘We must have a co-ordinated approach to these job losses. We will look at the problems the industry is facing and try to work out a better way forward.

‘‘We urge all these companies to hold their nerve and work with us to keep jobs and investment in the future.

‘‘We don’t believe the only way is to cut jobs.’’
