The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee has issued a statement explaining its reasons for cutting the base rate from 5.75% to 5.5%.

It says it's acting in response to the "downside risks to UK activity" from the slowdown in the world economy, the recent stock market falls and the foot-and-mouth outbreak.
