American telecoms giant lays off thousands of staff

WorldCom Inc, the second largest long-distance telecom company in the United States, has laid off about 6,000 workers in a bid to cut expenses and increase profits.

Nearly every segment of the company has been affected by the lay-offs, which represent about 7% of its worldwide workforce .
