Global chip market tops $200bn
Worldwide sales of semiconductors have topped $200bn in 2000.
The US Semiconductor industry group says the rise reflects the expansion of the internet and demand for communications equipment.
But they warn that record-setting sales are unlikely to carry over into 2001 as the US economy continues to slow and manufacturers report an excess of inventory.
In 2000, the chip industry saw growth in all markets and in all parts of the world, the group reported. In all, sales increased 37% from 1999.
"This was a very exciting year for our industry and reaching an all-time record high in sales of $204bn, which is around £136bn, is a great way to close the books for year 2000," said George Scalise, SIA president.
