Microsoft set to unveil Xbox

Microsoft is reported to be about to give its long-awaited video games console, the Xbox, its first public outing.

According to the Wall Street Journal, chairman Bill Gates will demonstrate the advanced gaming system during his speech to open the giant 2001 International CES trade fair at the Las Vegas Hilton on Saturday.

The firm will also offer details on its forthcoming satellite-based interactive TV venture, dubbed Ultimate TV.

Microsoft is to launch its assault on the lucrative gaming market in North America and Japan in the autumn.

But the XBox - which promises to rival Sony's PlayStation 2 in advanced graphics, audio and multiplayer gameplay - is not expected to reach in Europe until the first quarter of 2002.

Microsoft's presence at the event will include an exhibition showing consumers how technology will soon be seamlessly integrated throughout their homes.
