Careers 2017: ON Semiconductor seeking to fill quality roles

ON Semiconductor Ireland’s design centre in Raheen, Limerick, started in 2008 with 26 engineers, and has steadily grown to almost 60 engineers today.
Careers 2017: ON Semiconductor seeking to fill quality roles

The parent company, which is based in Phoenix, Arizona, is originally a spin-out, from Motorola back in 1999, and is now a top 20 semiconductor supplier with a total revenue of about $5bn and about 30,000 employees all over the globe, having grown through a mixture of acquisition and organic investment during the intervening time.

The team in Limerick is based in an exciting, new, purpose-built 22,000 sq ft design centre which the company acquired and fitted out to a very modern specification in early 2013. It was officially opened by Finance Minister Michael Noonan in September 2013.

A company spokesperson said: “We have a dynamic team comprising mostly electronic engineers, many from Ireland, but we also have an increasing number, about 20% today, from several other countries in Europe and further afield, and of course a healthy mix of male and female, although as is often the case in the engineering sector we are always delighted to see more females deciding to make their careers with us.

“In our Limerick design centre we focus on developing power supply controller integrated circuits to supply the power to high performance microprocessors. Our products are used in computing, smartphone, gaming, graphics, automotive, and other applications, and we have had almost a decade of successfully increasing our worldwide share in these markets with products developed by our Limerick team. We have full product responsibility, from defining the products based on our customers’ future needs to designing the products using state-of-the-art IC design tools on leading wafer fabrication processes.

“We then evaluate the prototype silicon before supporting our customers in designing our products into their systems/end products and developing the test solutions to deliver to the factories to support the required high volume manufacturing. As such we have a range of engineering disciplines in our team, from marketing and application engineers, to IC design, IC layout, test development, design evaluation, product engineering, and project management.”

As the range and complexity of products the team is creates grows, ON Seminconductor continually needs to grow the team with new engineers who are interested in joining the company, whose experiences range from graduate engineers direct from college through to engineers with several years spent working in similar roles in the sector. It has a number of open positions today, and the expectation is that there will be more in the near future and beyond.
