Rare archive footage shows Dublin coming to a standstill as Ireland beat Romania at Italia '90

A nation held its breath and then went a bit crazy in 1990 as Ireland beat Romania on penalties to qualify for the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

It was our first major tournament and if we weren't drunk on the gargle, we were giddy on the feelgood factor of the Boys In Green shaking up the World Cup.

Ireland had already shocked the footballing world by progressing from their group - which contained Holland, England and Egypt. and after a dull 0-0 second round knockout game drew to a close, nobody could have imagined what would happen next.
