Aldi has received the green-light to further extend its network of Irish stores by securing planning for a new outlet in the north Clare market and heritage town of Ennistymon.

The German retailer has received the go-ahead despite opposition from local farmers who remain angry that Clare Marts Ltd sold the old mart site in Ennistymon to the company.

In 2014, Clare Marts sold the site to Aldi for a price believed to be in the region of €1.5m in the face of opposition from farmers who at one stage held a silent protest outside a Clare Marts board meeting.
