“This new route will give business and tourist travellers increased access to and from the very centrally located London City Airport,” said Mr O’Connell.
The new service will add 3,420 seats each week from Cork Airport and expands on its short-haul network of 50 routes to destinations in UK and continental Europe.
Cork Airport MD, Niall McCarthy, said: “This is great news for business and leisure passengers alike. With 18 flights per week, this new service provides regular, convenient access right to the heart of the English capital from anywhere in Munster and adds to competition and choice for passengers in a key market.”
Each year, 800,000 passengers already travel on Cork Airport’s existing services to London — the airport’s most popular destination.
Cork Chamber worked with Cork Airport to highlighted demand among Cork businesses for the new route, as indicated in previous air travel demand surveys conducted by the Chamber.
Cork Chamber’s surveys have shown that 16% of businesses use the air travel services of Cork Airport on at least a weekly basis, 45% on at least a monthly basis and almost four of every five businesses (79%) on at a least a quarterly basis.
