Eurozone finance ministers yesterday struck a conciliatory tone for their first meeting with Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis when he presented his extensive plans on how to soften the austerity programme.

Work will begin immediately on analysing the differences between it and the existing programme for the next eurozone meeting on Monday.

However, a number of ground-rules were laid down by those attending the meeting, including that Athens must accept the commitments they made in exchange for loans, and the programme to meet these commitments must continue, but the details could be changed.
