C&C completes Gleeson takeover
C&C, known chiefly for its Bulmers and Magners cider brands, announced the âŹ12.4m takeover of the Gleeson Group in November 2012, with the overall purchase value rising to âŹ58m on the back of the distributorâs âŹ46m debts being taken on board.
C&C chief executive Stephen Glancey at the time said the deal could transform its& Irish business, giving it a more extensive distribution network and creating a more attractive multi-beverage brand platform.
As well as turning C&C into the largest distributor to the Irish pub trade, the deal gives it distribution rights to a number of extra brands including Tipperary Water, Finches juices, and Gleesonâs wine portfolio.
Formally launching C&C Gleeson yesterday, Mr Glancey said: âWe believe, with the completed acquisition and integration of the Gleeson Group, that we are now positioned to be Irelandâs number one wholesaler and the drinks supplier of choice to the countryâs licensed and off-trade.â
âWith our combined infrastructure now in place, our geographical footprint on the island of Ireland will be unmatched, with access to over 7,000 on-trade premises from a potential market of almost 10,000 outlets,â he added.
Mr Glancey said the purchase of Gleesonâs had been âthe next logical stepâ for C&C, as it continued to grow both organically and via strategic acquisition.
The enlarged group will employ 900 people and will hold on to its Irish heritage, according to marketing director, Brian Beattie.
âAt the centre of our strategic plans for growth is the belief that by staying true to our Irish roots and by creating additional value for our customers, we will be able to realise this objective. Our Irish heritage is integral to the business.â
