The yen and Swiss franc gained yesterday on haven demand after Ukrainian troops attacked and destroyed "part" of a military column that entered the country from Russia, Ukraine said.

Emerging-market currencies tumbled as Ukraine said its forces were coming under shelling, including rounds fired from Russian territory.

The dollar touched a two-week low after a report showed manufacturing in the New York region fell more than forecast. Malaysia’s ringgit hit its strongest level in nine months after economic growth sped to the fastest pace in six quarters. US treasuries also rose.
