German discounters grow Irish market share to 15.6%

The German discounters have continued to grow their share of the Irish grocery market, with Aldi and Lidl now commanding a combined 15.6% slice of the sector.

Latest data from consumer insights agency Kantar Worldpanel shows that, over the 12 weeks to the end of April, the two discounters saw their combined market share in Ireland grow from 13.5% to 15.6% on a year-on-year basis. Aldi grew its share from 6.6% to 8%, with Lidl rising from 6.9% to 7.6% on an annualised basis.

In terms of over-the-counter sales, Lidl recorded an annualised jump of 12.2%, with Aldi up by 22.2%, year-on-year.
