A €5m investment at Cork Internet eXchange’s (CIX) data centre has resulted in the company creating 10 new jobs as it doubles the capacity of its Hollyhill site.

The development of the new CIX 1B Data Centre has its sites firmly set on the future as Irish internet traffic is set to grow 200% a year and the Irish data-hosting market will grow 18% a year between now and 2016, outpacing Britain and mainland European locations.

Research and Innovation Minister Sean Sherlock said that the infrastructure needs to be in place to allow the region attract foreign direct investment.

“Data centres will form the technological backbone to the recovering economy nationally and regionally. The expansion of the CIX Data Centre will ensure Cork is well positioned to continue to attract international investment and support the indigenous and thriving tech sector here — a tech sector that is becoming a global leader and rightly recognised as such,” he said.

Chief executive of CIX, Jerry Sweeney said the investment showed CIX’s commitment to helping develop the region’s technological capabilities.

“There has been an explosion of digital technology and digital data in recent years. All this data must be processed, stored, managed, exchanged and monitored in data centres. We are dedicated to providing the best service to our customers,” HE SAID.
