Geordan Murphy's firm had cash pile of 530k when retirement announced

The main firm owned by former Irish rugby player, Geordan Murphy was sitting on a cash pile of more than €530,000 when the Kildare man announced his retirement from playing professional rugby last year.

Accounts just filed by the full-back’s firm, Geordan Murphy Ltd to Companies House in the UK show that the firm had the cash pile of £438,614 (€532,680) at the end of June last (2013).

The figures show that the company’s accumulated profits increased by £63,417 going from £306,732 to £370,149 in the 12 months.

The former Ireland international retired from club rugby with Leicester at the end of last season after celebrating the eighth Premiership title of his career.

The 35-year-old, who won 72 caps for Ireland, was troubled by a knee injury for much of his last season and has since taken up a role as assistant backs coach at Leicester.

The figures for Geordan Murphy Ltd show the firm increased its cash pile during the year by £65,462 from £373,152 to £438,614.

The firm’s shareholder funds increased from £291,733 to £355,150.

The abridged accounts filed show that Murphy has a 25% share in a restaurant business, Timo’s Restaurant Ltd.

Along with winning the 72 caps for Ireland, Murphy also played in two British and Irish Lions Tests.

Playing in four Heineken Cup Finals for Leicester, with winners’ medals in 2001 and 2002, Murphy also graced a record eight Premiership finals.

Speaking last year about his retirement, Murphy said: “Every player wants to play on forever but, unfortunately, your body just doesn’t let you do that.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I have had to accept defeat and announce that I will retire from playing this season.

“I have been very lucky with Leicester to win a fair amount of silverware, and I am looking forward to looking back on that at some stage.”
