Ireland’s seafood sector is poised for major expansion in the Chinese market following a trial deal struck yesterday in Cork.

Union Hall-based Glenmar Shellfish will ship 80 tonnes of Irish produce to five new Chinese buyers visiting West Cork as part of a week-long Bord Bia trade mission.

Total exports of Irish seafood to China in 2012 were valued at almost €10m. The latest trends up to the middle of 2013 show exports 45% higher at €9.5m on the corresponding period in 2012.
