180 jobs created as firms expand

More than 180 jobs are being created as three food firms and a call centre expand.

Jobs Minister Richard Bruton said the companies were a model of what the Government is trying to achieve with an action plan for jobs.

Kildare-based O’Brien Fine Foods, which produces premium cooked hams, sausages, rashers and puddings for the retail trade markets in the UK and Ireland, will take on 51 staff in Timahoe.

It is investing €3m in the operation.

Green Farm Foods, which also produces premium cooked meat products, will hire 30 workers in a €2.8m investment in Rathowen, Co Westmeath.

The expansion will double production and allow the company to expand existing international markets and enter new markets.

Swift Fine Foods, in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, which produces chilled and frozen ready meals, is creating 53 jobs over the next three years in a €3m investment.

The fourth company, Stream Global Service, which provides technical support at offices in Swords and Santry, is to hire 50 staff. Another 200 seasonal positions are also being filled.

The heads of the three food companies paid tribute to Enterprise Ireland for the supports that had been provided and emphasised that food business help to support local producers.

Head of O’Brien Fine Foods, Bill O’Brien, said that his company has roots deep in the community.

“We have always endeavoured to support the local Irish economy, and especially the rural economy, through continuing to source only Irish pork. We are supporting the local community through our new sponsorship of Kildare GAA county hurling and football teams. We want to be known as a growing, successful Irish food company and a large indigenous employer.”
