The impact of the new Common Agricultural Policy programme on young farmers will be the focus of Macra na Feirme’s annual conference in Tullow, Co Carlow, on Oct 26.

Conference to examine impact of CAP on young farmers

“New Cap — New Era” is the theme for the bank holiday weekend conference, which will be hosted at the Mount Wolseley Hotel by Carlow Macra.

Nigel Hogan of the conference organising committee said the theme is very fitting considering the current position of young farmers in Ireland.

It is a very exciting time for young farmers as there is now clarity about a new agricultural policy, and with the impending abolition of milk quotas, he said.

Mr Hogan said the CAP is about continuing intensive and sustainable agriculture and the provision of food.

It makes a vital contribution to the public good, and CAP supports are crucial, he added.

Farming is a challenging career and young farmers need the technical and business expertise to succeed, Mr Hogan said.

The conference, a highlight of the Macra year, is sponsored by Dawn Meats and Ulster Bank, with Beat FM as media partners.

A recent Macra study which showed that 48% of farmers aged over 50 have no identified successor will also be discussed at the conference, as will acquiring better access to land and opportunities available to young farmers.
