Burton defends role of Community Employment Schemes

Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has launched a defence of the Community Employment Schemes in the face of criticism from the OECD on its effectiveness.

Burton defends role of Community Employment Schemes

“Community employment is a part of the absolute social infrastructure of the community around Ireland. The community dividend that comes from these social employment schemes, that does not butter many parsnips for labour market economists, but for communities around the country there are vital services, ranging from environmental improvements to services to older people, like assistance to meals on wheels.

It is one of the things that has helped Ireland come through this very difficult period. Community employment is an enormous social good and social gain. It is not just about getting people back to work. I think there is a very strong case for it.”
