Travel firm marks 90 years in business
Heffernan’s Travel, which was established in Cork in 1923 by the late George Heffernan, will give away holiday vouchers, cruise and air tickets as part of its celebrations at its Pembroke St offices.
It also has two All-Ireland tickets up for grabs in a draw.
The company opened its first office on Marlboro St just after the Irish Civil War before moving two years later to the South Mall.
The business was bought by the Collins family in 1967 and relocated to Pembroke St.
It has been run by husband and wife team Kieran and Carol Collins since 2005.
Mr Collins said the company has continuously adapted over the years.
“We are an old company with a very young heart,” he said.
“We are continuously reinventing ourselves, and reinvesting.
“But most importantly, it’s the people who work here. They are the company, they make us win.”
Its 14 staff specialise in foreign weddings, family sun holidays, city breaks, ski holidays and long-haul once-in-a-lifetime holidays.
Sports groups, especially golfing holidays, have become big business in recent years. The firm also operates a full corporate travel service.
But it has seen a 110% increase in business flowing through its own one-stop online booking tool, easyholidays.ie, aimed at customers who like to book their own flights and hotels.
Mr Collins said Heffernan’s hopes to develop this concept further with a new hotels site.
