The Central Bank has appointed a French official to take over as financial regulator, the second foreigner in succession to fill the role.

Cyril Roux, an insurance specialist who is a senior official at the French prudential supervisory authority, the ACPR, will replace Briton Matthew Elderfield, who is stepping down for personal reasons.

It is understood that Mr Roux will take over the position on the same salary, €310,000, as Mr Elderfield was paid.
