Greyhound industry injects €500m into local economies, claims Hayes

The greyhound racing industry injects an estimated €500m into local economies, according to Minister of State Tom Hayes.

He said Bord na gCon also estimates that the sector is responsible for sustaining over 10,000 full and part-time jobs directly and indirectly, many in rural communities.

Mr Hayes highlighted the contribution made by the industry during a visit to Thurles Greyhound Stadium.

He also paid tribute to the sponsors of the feature event at the track last Saturday night and their sustained commitment to the venue.

“Thurles Fresh Milk has been generous sponsors of the Tipperary Cup and Thurles Greyhound Stadium for the past 20 years,” he said.

Mr Hayes said the stadium is over 63 years in existence and was refurbished in 1998 and an extension added in 2011.

“The vision and determination shown by the board of directors here at Thurles Stadium has ensured that this magnificent stadium, standing in the heart of the sporting community of the town, will continue to host many great evenings of greyhound racing into the future,”

Mr Hayes said much credit must go to Bord na gCon for their investment in the industry and all those involved in sustaining the industry against the backdrop of the current economic environment.

“Co-operation among all stakeholders in the industry is vital to the future success of this much valued industry and sport,” he said.
