The EU’s budget for research will be €70bn for the next seven years under a political agreement reached in Brussels — and Ireland hopes to win €1bn of that.

Research and innovation minister Seán Sherlock said work would begin as soon as possible on making sure the country’s third- level institutions, companies, and especially small and medium-sized enterprises, could avail of the huge potential the fund will open up.

He was involved in the final push to get the programme, known as Horizon 2020, agreed between the European Parliament, the member states represented by Ireland, and the Commission, led by Commissioner Máire Geoghegan Quinn.
