The Cork branch of HMV on Patrick St is not among the branches which are recruiting staff in anticipation of reopening.

Managing director of Excel Recruitment Barry Whelan said the new deal with HMV Ireland is a positive development.

“It is fantastic to see the much-loved HMV brand return to Ireland and it is a very positive thing for the Irish retail industry and job market.

Mr Whelan said anyone interested in store management roles or full and part-time sales assistant positions should visit excelrecruitment.com.

Hilco, the restructuring company which bought 141 HMV shops for €59m from receivers Deloitte, is understood to be in talks with landlords with a view to re-establishing further HMV outlets in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick, and is attempting to renegotiate rents.

HMV’s former Grafton St flagship shop has already been put on the market for €1m.

Retail Excellence Ireland CEO David Fitzsimon said HMV was facing a number of challenges but that the brand was a welcome return to the high street.

“We welcome them back. It’s not only battling reduced consumer spend but alsoa change in consumerbehaviour, particularly in how we consume music.

“This is a welcome re-entry to the market,” Mr Fitzsimon said.
