Farming families go for gold with launch of probiotic compost

Having secured €100,000 in funding from the West Cork Development Partnership and Cork County Council, the Celtic Worm Company is to sell Celtic Gold in garden centres and creameries shortly.

Gardening expert, author, and TV presenter Peter Dowdall has endorsed Celtic Gold, saying the wormcast stimulates micro-organisms in the compost to increase the strength, health and vitality of plants. “I am really excited to see wormcast products being made in Ireland. The results of using these products in your garden are dramatic. Using wormcast is like putting a spoon of live yoghurt into the soil, it literally brings the earth back to life.”

The secret to the probiotic compost is in the worms themselves. It makes use of worms to turn organic waste into nutrient-rich fertilisers, soil enhancers and composts. Research at University College Cork on the effects of wormcast on plants revealed that a 10% addition of wormcast to compost increased plant growth by over 100% and root growth by almost 60%.

With a Liquid Gold bio-fertiliser next in line for production, the company plans to significantly build the range with the support of this recent funding injection. To find out more, visit www.celticworm.com
