Motor dealer calls on Government to introduce used car scrappage scheme

A used car scrappage scheme would give exchequer figures and consumer confidence a timely boost, according to a leading motor dealer.

Motor dealer calls on Government to introduce used car scrappage scheme

Bill Keary, chief executive of Keary’s Renault Cork Dealership, cited the latest Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) figures showing a decline of 18% in new car sales in May.

SIMI predicts total 2012 sales of 75,000 cars, compared to 130,000 in a “normal” year.

“A scrappage scheme would get old bangers off the road, and it would bring in extra revenue for the Government,” said Mr Keary, whose company has sold 63 cars since last Thursday as part of its VIP Renault Weekend event.

“Consumers respond to great value,” he said. “In 2008, a Clio was €16,250. You can get one for €10,990 today. A BMW 520 diesel would set you back €65,000 in 2008, but you’d get it for €45,000 today.

“But, despite prices being at rock-bottom, consumer confidence is at an all-time low. The dealers are doing all they can to give value. The Government also needs to do all it can to boost confidence.”

Brendan Keary, director at Keary’s Renault, said he was delighted that the company had broken new records by selling 63 cars in three days, with sales staff donning tuxedos for the promotion.

The company was also recently named Renault Dealer of the Year by the Renault Group in Paris.

Brendan Keary said: “The motor market has changed drastically in the last number of years, but Keary’s continues to adapt and evolve to meet market conditions, and give the customer what they want, which is value above all else, currently.

“Winning the award from Renault Group in Paris been a great boost to our team,” he added.
