Young contenders sought to compete in annual silage contest
This year the competition allows the entrant to have the mineral content of their silage analysed. The results of the mineral content and the nutritional characteristics of the silage will form the basis to assess the winner.
The competition is open to Macra members and is an opportunity for young farmers to test their knowledge of growing grass in the hopes of winning a rising platemeter courtesy of Grasstec.
Macra national president Alan Jagoe launched the 2012 KW Forage Systems silage competition at a walk on the farm of last year’s winner, Brian O’Mahony, from Innishannon, Co Cork.
Mr Jagoe said: “The competition gives young farmers an insight into the benefits of measuring grass and maximising profitability. The competition will facilitate young farmers to develop and hone their grass management and silage making skills.”
