DAIRY farmers are calling on Ireland’s co-ops to deliver a Christmas bonus after an excellent year for the sector, according to the Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA).

ICMSA dairy committee chairperson Pat McCormack wants the boards to immediately announce an end-of-year bonus to their milk suppliers in recognition of the successful year they enjoyed throughout 2011, based on market returns and milk price paid to farmers.

Mr McCormack said: “Dairy markets showed conspicuous improvements from about February 2011 onwards and clear evidence of this can be seen from both the Irish Dairy Board returns and Dutch dairy quotations, as well as other dairy market indicators.
