TELECOMS entrepreneur Denis O’Brien has put together a “crack team” to determine if a bid to take over troubled debt ridden Eircom could pay-off.

Tax exile O’Brien’s Digicel, the Caribbean and Central America-based mobile phone company, has made an approach about a possible takeover of Eircom.

Eircom, currently in talks with lenders to restructure €3.75 billion in debt, said at the weekend it had received an approach from a third party to help restructure its finances. Eircom has built up the significant debt burden after five changes in ownership in 10 years.
