A €4 million rise in the company’s fuel bill resulted in a drop in pre-tax profits at ferries group Irish Continental (ICG).

The company, which owns Irish Ferries, said the economic outlook remains “challenging”, with austerity programmes affecting consumer demand for travel and freight markets.

However, it said it is structured to compete and to continue generating cash.
