THE potential for infant formula exports will be one of the main topics under discussion at the Agricultural Science Association (ASA) annual conference in Carton House Hotel, Maynooth, Co Kildare, on Friday, September 9.

Dr Paul Ross, head of food research with Teagasc, will reveal details of the new research collaboration between Teagasc and the Irish Dairy Board, based at the new Dairy Innovation Centre in Fermoy, Co Cork.

Dr Ross will also talk about research into new functional foods and enhanced infant milk formula, where Ireland is a global leader, producing 16% of world output.

The ASA conference will feature an impressive team of top-table speakers, covering a range of agri-food subjects. Among them is Dr Joe Glauber, chief economist with the US department of agriculture.

Mr Glauber will be joined by Stan McCarthy, chief executive of the Kerry Group which has annual sales of over €5 billion, produces over 15,000 food and ingredients products and employs 23,000 worldwide.

The conference, which is sponsored by FBD, will also be addressed by Dr Tassos Haniotis, top agricultural policy analyst in the European Commission, Cyrille Filott, leading food analyst with Rabobank in Holland and Joe Gill of Bloxham Stockbrokers.

Alex Ricard, chief executive of Irish Distillers, will disclose the secrets behind the remarkable success story of Jameson whiskey, where sales have increased more than six-fold to over three million cases a year since Irish Distillers joined Pernod Ricard.

Irish Distillers is investing heavily in expanding capacity at its facility in Midleton. The annual marketing and promotion spend on Jameson is over €80m.

Breiffini Kennedy, Bord Bia’s Asia manager, will provide firsthand knowledge of China, the world’s fastest growing food market, while Stuart Roberts of Larry Goodman’s Anglo Beef Processors in Britain will give an insight into consumer perceptions of Irish beef in Britain, our most important export destination.
