Irish Times names O’Sullivan as editor
He will assume his role with immediate effect, his promotion also meaning he will take a seat on the newspaper’s board.
While not viewed as the out-and-out favourite for the post, Mr O’Sullivan’s name has featured prominently on speculative short-lists in recent months and his appointment is generally not being viewed as a surprise.
A staff member with the newspaper since 1997, Mr O’Sullivan has filled the role of news editor at Tara Street for the past five years. He has also served as the title’s night editor, special projects head, environmental and food science correspondent and editor of its health supplement.
Originally from Tramore, Co Waterford, the 51-year-old — who graduated with a BSc from UCD in 1981 and a diploma in journalism from DCU two years later — previously worked with the Connacht Tribune and the Tuam Herald. He takes over from Geraldine Kennedy, who — after nine years as editor — announced her intention to stand down, in March. The Irish Times board yesterday paid tribute to Ms Kennedy, thanking her for her commitment to the newspaper and to its objectives and ethos and for her “clear dedication to the role of editor”.
Ms Kennedy had said she would leave upon her successor’s appointment.
