TILLAGE farmers can improve their yields for some crops by 100kg- 150kg per hectare per year by following genetic enhancement measures detailed in a new manual, Certified Seed, launched by Teagasc.

Prof Jimmy Burke of Teagasc’s National Crops Research Centre, Oak Park, Carlow, said genetic improvement is proven to deliver productivity benefits which are key to enhancing the competitive- ness of Irish farming.

Prof Burke said: “Plant breeding techniques are continuously evolving and contribute 1.0% to 1.5% yield improvement per annum. Yields, lodging resistance, plant health, and overall grain quality have improved massively in recent decades.
